DUKE RESIDENTS DO - GARDENING COMMUNITY PROJECT WITH SPACE 2

09/11/17

Just before the autumn draws into a long cold winter, Duke Residents volunteered some of their time and efforts to help a community garden project get off (in) the ground. Space 2 are running an excellent series of project and events called Fork to Fork.

Fork to Fork is a food growing and cooking project run by Space 2 and helped by Hyde Park Source. It supports individuals to develop gardening and cooking skills, meet new people and get involved with their local community. It also helps participants build the skills to become volunteers who will maintain a community garden.

With a chronic supply of apple flapjack we arrived in Gipton. Our main jobs consisted of shifting soil, building borders and constructing a workshed. Soft handed, desk based workers - let loose on power tools with hands on hard labour... Though is sounded like a horror movie - It was an excellent way to spend an afternoon and pretty great to be out in the fresh air. Wholesome and (at times dubiously) helpful. We did have Alan of LAAND with us - Landscape Architect in his element.

We would 100% recommend getting in touch with either of these fantastic charities to find out more about their various projects. They are always looking for extra pairs of hands- as a one off or a regular stint. More details on their volunteering options can be found here for Space 2, and here for Hyde Park Source.
