Interview with Duke Resident Studio J
12/01/15 Laura Wellington - Co Founder
Who are you and what do you do?
I am James Butterworth and I am the Managing Director of Studio J Architects.
Most of the projects I work on are bespoke architectural designs for private individual clients or small businesses, ranging from small extensions, to internal refurbishments and new build properties. I work on the designs from initial concept, through the planning and building regulations processes and all the way through to completion on site.
Due to the range of projects I work on and the varying stages of the design and construction process I rarely have 2 work days the same, which is one of the things I love about my job.
What brought you to Duke?
I was looking for a new office as I was not happy where I currently was (expensive, faceless and lacking in a community). I heard about Duke through Twitter and I immediately loved the concept. Studio J was part of the first group of companies to move in and it’s been great watching it develop around us.
What are you working on at the moment? or what things have you done recently that you are proud of?
I’ve got many projects ongoing at the moment, such as a development of 6 new build houses in Bradford currently being built and a handful of extensions for private homes in and around Leeds, ranging in size and complexity. I recently finished the conversion of a redundant care home to 7 apartments and the unique fitout for an independent city centre sandwich shop.
One project I am particularly looking forward to starting the construction works on is the refurbishment and extension to a large Art Deco house. It’s got loads of the original character and when completed I think it will be a stunning home.
I’m also just in the process of finishing the refurbishment of my own home. It’s a period property with lots of original features that we are restoring while updating the house for modern living.
What are you going to/doing/seeing in Leeds at the moment? Or is there something you are looking forward to?
The biggest thing that I’m looking forward to at the moment will be the birth of my first child in April. There are a few new bars and restaurants opened recently in Leeds so I’m hoping to visit as many as possible before the birth as I think my time will be limited for a while afterwards!
